Process Engineering Intern (Co-op)
Winter 2023 - Spring 2023
Overview
In this co-op I was the principle process engineer involved in the scale up of a salt-water flow battery pilot system. My specific tasks included battery data analysis to improve voltage/current efficiency, design of auxiliary systems, and modelling (thermal, techno-economic, battery performance prediction).
Although the amount I can disclose is very limited, I gained experience in battery testing (EIS, chronopotentiometry), analysis of battery data and characterizing IR drop, implementing a DAQ to measure important outputs, developing safety protocols, and sizing heat exchangers for the pilot system. As the lead engineer for the scale-up, I developed interdisciplinary skills while handling every system that is involved in a flow battery. By the end of my internship, the pilot system was running as intended with important metrics that were able to be accessed via the new data collection system.
